Feeling SUPER inspired today: lemme tell you why!

May 6, 2012 at 11:33 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

So….

…….due in part to the persuasive energies of the SUPERmoon, I seem to have rekindled my interest in all things paranormal, SUPERhero, SUPERhuman, horrific, sci-fi, fantasy and cool in general.  This seems to include anything bad ass IMHO.

This exploration of self – and rediscovery of previous passions – has resulted in two sizeable purchases from the Book Nook here in T-Town (READ: comics, paperbacks, Trade Paper Backs, Luis Royo hardcover art collections, numerous Heavy Metal items, action figures [HAD TO get the Bubba-Ho-Tep, Predator 2, and Tall Man from Phantasm (came with little ghoulish minion)!], free comics from FREE COMIC BOOK DAY [FCBD 2012]). This wonderous madness began when I searched eBay for Gen13 comics a few weeks back and found an interesting lot of 114 books…..which are now in my possession *evil grin*. Now that I have discovered the Book Nook, I will likely be a reagular fixture on days off when I am here in T-Town seeking out inspiration for my own works….. it’s very interesting, how flipping through a Royo book of penciled sketches of women with weapons can lead to vivid imaginings of the people who may or may not be involved in their unwritten story, the villains, the monsters, the personal demons, the hopes, the dreams, so on and so forth.  At least, that’s how MY twisted brain works….

Suffice it to say, I am hoping to get some INTENSIVE reading and writing done in the next few months.

Since I’ve just joined Weight Watchers, that R & W will of course have to be balanced with a good dose of E & AOFP (exercise and assorted other fitness pursuits!!!).  I have approximately 77 lbs I want to shed, so it will be an interesting adventure.  So far, WWO (Weight Watchers Online) is a great source of support, planning, tracking, and so on — very useful programming indeed, well worth the $110/6month subscription I have outfitted myself with.

And, for every 5 lbs I lose, I am going to gift myself with a gorgeous pair of shoes from JustFabulous, sexy shoes being my OTHER rekindled obsession!!!

Now: I’m off to eat something nutritious & low with WW points, put away my laundry, stack my purchases, and then it’ll be INTENSIVE READING AND/OR WRITING TIME!!!!

Thank you for your continued interest in my work, passions, and pursuits.

I can only hope that I will delight you more than I disappoint you!!!

Sincere regards and happy reading!

“Tomorrow” sensual fantasy romance novel reviewed yesterday by Long and Short Reviews

March 26, 2010 at 9:56 pm (General News..., Possible directions..., Reviews, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Fern at Long and Short reviews reviewed my romacne novel and gave it “Four Books”. To see her review, visit, http://longandshortreviews.blogspot.com/2010/03/tomorrow-by-amanda-m-holt.html or simply read below!

Tomorrow by Amanda M. Holt
Publisher: Devine Destinies (www.devinedestinies.com)
Genre: Historical, Paranormal, Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Length: Full (188 pages)
Heat: Spicy
Rating: 4 Books
Reviewed by Fern

To the wizard, Sebastian Cole, it was a simple plan: steal his true love away to a world where they could be alone, together, to realize that love. There was one underlying condition: the enchantment would end only when she professed love for him.

To Alanna, proud daughter of Lord Fowler, it was a fool’s plan. No matter what her attraction to the mysterious and gifted Sebastian Cole, she would never love him—never! Certainly not under duress…or would she?

With patience, and persistence, Sebastian shows Alanna many of the wonders of his magical world—from the fantasy creatures living among them, to the delight of his touch, the passion of his kiss… Alanna’s interest in the wizard grows, but to what end? Will her true love set them free?

What would you do to secure the love of the woman you cannot live without? For Sebastian Cole, the answer is as simple as listening to the wish of his beloved. Alanna Fowler declares the only way she could possibly love Sebastian is if they were the last man and woman on earth, which is something he obliges with a spell that can only sever when she professes her love and marries him.

What happens next is a game of seduction and denial, during which Alanna vows not to cave into Sebastian’s magical charms. But is she wrong? Are the feelings she’s experiencing the result of a spell? Or is she really and truly falling for the handsome wizard who makes her heart melt and ignites a fire in her soul?

Tomorrow is a story that is written in a lyrical voice, situated in a world where fairies and magic exist. The tone is light and whimsical until the conclusion, which is fantastic for a story in this genre. My complaint isn’t in the world building, but rather, resides in Alanna’s unwavering determination to keep Sebastian at an arm’s length through the first half of the story. Unmarried until she finds love, she confesses at the beginning to longing for only one man – Sebastian – who she made a fool of herself in front of after she drunkenly threw herself at him during a party. I found it odd that she would fight against what she’s always wanted (how can you love if you refuse to consider it?) when he offers it to her on an enchanted platter. Aside from this, however, I was captivated and couldn’t stop reading from beginning to end. When Sebastian wears down Alanna’s defenses, the chemistry sizzles.

The writing style is unique, as is the voice. Amanda M. Holt creates characters that you can’t forget and places them in surroundings that are both vivid and lush. There is so much here, both fantastical and extraordinary, that a reader is bound to enjoy.

Fans of fantasy romances should be sure to put Tomorrow on their TBR list. As the story is left with a cliffhanger, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next story in the series.

To submit or not to submit – that is the question PART DEUX

March 16, 2010 at 12:21 am (Ellora's Cave updates..., General News..., Grumble, Introduction to the Imagination of Amanda M. Holt, Literary blunders..., Possible directions..., Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

So……….
…………..There’s one little difference between a contracted work with Ellora’s Cave and that of other eBook publishers I have seen. At EC they appear to require a contract binding your project for the lifetime of the work. I assume that THAT is different from lifetime of the contract. Perhaps I misunderstand?

I would really like to send them my tale, BOUND: A POST-APOCALYPTIC LUST STORY (the title I decided on after much deliberation, for the tale of my jungle huntress Ana, and her first interracial adventure).

I am in the process of writing a shiny new synopsis for Ellora’s Cave to try and win their approval/capture and hold their attention…

…given that I have NO intention of having Ana’s interracial erotica/BDSM tale end after the first encounter with her hero, if EC is interested in publishing her, I will have to find a way to ensure that her background story as a fictional character is fair game in the next installment…

…Now is Ellora’s Cave going to be interested in my dear sweet Ana and her adventures in her jungle home? I am really looking forward to hearing their opinion on thist project…

Time will tell, I suppose.

Stay tuned for more on that.

I will be submitting BOUND to them this week.

Sincere regards,

Amanda M. Holt

Spicy New Erotica Release by NCP!!!

February 15, 2010 at 9:02 pm (Grumble, Literary blunders..., New Concepts Publishing Releases, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Hello again, people!

Today I advertise “An Unusual Encounter of the Rock Star Kind”, a contemporary paranormal romance novella, the blurb for which reads as follows:

“A chance encounter with the lead singer of a rock band leaves Cassandra rapt with anticipation. Les is everything that the young nurse has ever dreamed of – and the sexy drummer from Boston is even hotter up close in person! He is apologetic for accidentally knocking her to the frozen Winnipeg sidewalk, yet she barely feels the ice and snow with all the heat that is rushing through her core.

Cassandra wonders if his invitation to supper is as innocent as it seems. Is it his way of saying ‘sorry’, or the beginning of something more? She finds herself wondering: just how far is this encounter going to go?

More than that, she wonders: what will be for dessert?”

Rating: SPICY-Graphic language, one sex scene.

Genre: Contemporary Paranormal Romance.

This little novella has been a point of contention between myself and my editor at New Concepts Publishing. I felt that the tale should be told in present tense, first person. They felt that it was fine in its original version, of mixed present tense and past tense, as they felt that a story must be told in past tense, not moment by moment.

I wrote this piece entirely as a writing exercise, to flex my nubulous literary muscles (read: amateur finger flexes, ten thousand word repetitions). I wanted to test the waters, to try different tenses and see what the end result would be.

The end product? A product that my editors seemed thrilled with (thrilled enough to publish), but something that I feel is a touch awkward in its current state.

I guess the only way I’ll know for sure whether “An Unusual Encounter of the Rock Star Kind” is a hit or a miss is through book sales and love or hate mail as a direct result of that audience…

Either way, whether it sinks or swims, I welcome your critique, comments, and constructive criticism on the latter.

You can always email me at holt_writer@hotmail.com

My sincere thanks for your support and interest!

The blurb for this sensual 182-page fantasy romance is as follows:

To Alanna, proud daughter of Lord Fowler, it was a fool’s plan. No matter what her attraction to the mysterious and gifted Sebastian Cole, she would never love him—never! Certainly not under duress…or would she?

Will my post-apocalyptic erotica novella find a home?

February 2, 2010 at 1:51 am (Ellora's Cave updates..., Possible directions..., Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

So……

………I have decided that I am going to query Ellora’s Cave books about my post-apocalyptic novella about Ana, the Amazon-like warrioress, her remote jungle home and the enigmatic fertility researcher who happens upon her exsquisite nude form as she is taking an afternoon swim after a long – and successful – hunt.

Wow. That was a mouthful. Try saying that really fast – you are guaranteed to run out of breath. My fabulous high school English teacher Mr. Ortwein once informed me in as gentle a manner possible that I am at times guilty of run-away (or run-on?) sentences like the one above. He did this in the cutest way: he drew a little run-away train going off the tracks saying “choo-choo” to give emphasis to his point.

Suffice to say, I remember this lesson well and as a result am now apologizing for the run-away train sentence you read, as well as any you may read in the future on this blog – or in my novels.

Back to the whole point of THIS post.

I am going to query Ellora’s Cave Books about Ana’s story (the title of which I soon have to decide on). It is an interracial/multi-racial sexy romp that I hope they will find delightfully intriguing. It is my hope that Ellora’s will pick up this title so that I can build a relationship and reputation with them for future work.

I am doing this not because I am entirely or largely dissatisfied with my other two publishers, Extasy Books and New Concepts Publishing, but because Ellora’s Cave seems to have a fabulous reputation, a large following/readership and will potentially offer greater exposure for moi, the amateur authoress Amanda M. Holt (or my chosen pen name).

Now, I pose this question to any who might listen and offer an opinion: should I query Ellora’s Cave with the suggestion that I publish Ana’s story under my own name – Amanda M. Holt – or publish Ana’s story under a pen name (such as Alexandra Gayle, the nom de plume that I am just ITCHING to use, as it is a combination of the names of both of my Godparents).

What to do, what to do?

Please advise.

Sincere regards,

Amanda M. Holt

p.s. – for those of you who don’t know what a query letter is, it can be best described as A) A query letter is a formal letter sent to magazine editors, literary agents and sometimes publishing houses or companies (Wikipedia definition) and B) A brief written presentation to an agent or editor designed to pitch both the writer and the book idea (definition from brochure-design.com )…C) a query letter basically asks if a publishing house would be interested in seeing your work (or a sample of your work — my simplest definition)…Now here I go, aiming to find time in my Nursing Student schedule to pen an attention-grabbing query letter!

Reaper 3: Evil Among Us

January 28, 2010 at 2:23 am (eXtasy Books Releases, Introduction to the Imagination of Amanda M. Holt, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Reaper 3: Evil Among Us (Cover Art by Martine Jardin)

This third book in the Reaper Series, Reaper 3: Evil Among Us introduces a new villain to the Reaper’s world: her name is Lust, and she exudes a mind-controlling pheremone that places Samantha under her complete control for an evening of Sapphic pleasures. The morning brings with it the terrible truth and the burden of guilt. Samantha has always been bi curious, but she has just cheated on Neal with a stranger – a female stranger! Uncertain of whether or not she was forced into the encounter, or if she truly wanted Lust’s affections, Samantha struggles with feelings of guilt and unworthiness at Neal’s phone call: here’s yet another terrible secret that she must keep from him, if their relationship has any hope of lasting.

A new ally – or is it, enemy? – reveals herself in the form of a young girl – Natalie – who, though blind in one eye, has visions of the future. A dark future full of danger for the Reaper. The girl pleads with Samantha to welcome her as an ally. Does Samantha dare accept the girl’s help? Something about the young girl really rubs Samantha the wrong way…

After a massacre at a church brings Samantha perilously close to being apprehended by the authorities, she must use Neal as an alibi. Lying to her cop lover – yet again – is risky business. Off the hook, she evades suspicion once more, though just barely.

Fighting demons of the Hell dimension as surely as she fights the demons of her mind, Samantha goes toe to toe with opponents against whom she is helpless. They are the Shiro Tai, Japanese warriors whose holy fire burns through the black second-skin of her exoskeleton leaving her wounded and exposed.

Worse yet, Natalie has caught the entire thing on video!

Samantha runs to her healer for help, only to hear that Angela cannot heal these wounds. How is she going to explain these injuries to Neal and to her partner on the force? Furthermore, if Natalie goes to the media with her recording, her life – as she knows it – is over!

What does the future hold for a woman who’s on the verge of losing EVERYTHING?

Reaper 2: Villains and Allies (Cover Art by Martine Jardin)

In the sequel to Reaper: The Beginning, Reaper 2: Villains and Allies further reveals the mystery behind the origin of Samantha Bennet’s supernatural abilities and the challenges that she faces in balancing her duties as a police officer with her actions as a vigilante. As the Reaper (as Heaven’s judge, jury and executioner) she leads a life of solitude with few allies and countless enemies.

Samantha discovers a new vulnerability after a militant sect of a zealous religious order attacks and wounds her. She must turn to her only source of help, Angela, a white witch and healer whose own mysterious history traces back to the birth of the Pyramids.

With a telltale scar marking where the Hunters’ weapon dealt its fateful blow, Sam fears that her boyfriend – and fellow officer of the law, Neal – will take note of it and become suspicious that things are not as they seem.

When villains of both the human and supernatural variety make it difficult for Samantha to lead her double life, she deals with them the only way she knows how: with gratuitous violence!

How far will she go the enact Heaven’s brand of justice?

Reaper: The Beginning

January 27, 2010 at 11:01 pm (eXtasy Books Releases, Introduction to the Imagination of Amanda M. Holt, Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Reaper: The Beginning (Artwork by Martine Jardin)

Reaper: The Beginning is the first novel in my Reaper Series of books, following the initial manifestation of Samantha Bennet’s paranormal nature during an attack on her young self. As her black exoskeleton appears for the first time sporting razor sharp claws, one can see that it’s a terrible way for a teenager to find out that she’s different from everyone else. The vengeance she exacts on on her attackers is swift and ruthless and in the aftermath she is left wondering where this strange and lethal “second skin” has come from.

As an adult, Samantha burns the candle at both ends fighting crime: as a vigilante in the dark of night and as a rookie police officer paired up with Phil, an experienced cop who becomes a father figure as well as a dear friend. She finds lust – and possibly love – in the arms of a co-worker, Neal, who brings her to heights of ecstasy she has never before known. Yet as Neal tries to foster a closeness between them, Samantha pulls away and feels more alone than ever before. She knows that her dark secret must never be revealed, not to her lover (who as an officer of the law might be more inclined to attempt to arrest her than to applaud her actions), not to anyone she cares about!

An Eastern mystic is privy to the truth about the origin of Samantha’s power. His revelation is shocking and hard to believe. The biological father Sam never knew was a notorious Fallen Angel, making her a Nephalim, the offspring of her mother’s human womb and Azkaziel’s angelic seed.

With villains both human and supernatural coming out of the woodwork and her lover becoming suspicious of her late-night outings, does Samantha have a snowball’s hope in Hell of surviving what Fate has dealt her?

Find out in this, the first book of four (so far) in the Reaper Series, on sale now at http://www.extasybooks.com (see Amanda M. Holt under the Author Search).
